30 Years of Rebellion: Acne Studios Enfilade Into Luxury

7 March 2026

On a Wednesday evening in Paris, the medieval vaults of the Collège des Bernardins were transformed into an "enfilade of salons," marking a monumental milestone: the 30th anniversary of Acne Studios. For co-founder and Creative Director Jonny Johansson, the Fall/Winter 2026 collection was less about nostalgia and more a study of "aristocratic minimalism"—a thoughtful reflection on how a brand rooted in DIY rebellion became a pillar of Parisian luxury.

The Architecture of Memory

The show’s set design served as a poignant symbol for the brand’s journey. The connected doorways mirrored a landmark 2010 show held at Kensington Palace, but where that earlier infiltration felt like a rebellious statement, the 2026 presentation exuded a genuine sense of belonging. This "enfilade" allowed the audience to walk through thirty years of accumulated knowledge and refined technique.

Returning to the DNA

At the heart of the collection was a return to the "Soul of Denim." Johansson revisited the brand’s origin—the 1996 straight-leg, high-waisted silhouette with its signature red stitching. These archival cuts were reimagined through trompe l'œil effects, appearing as if photocopied or collaged, a meta-commentary on the physical garment's role in an increasingly digital landscape.

The collection further blurred the lines between fashion and fine art through a partnership with photographer Paul Kooiker. Extra-long silk scarves featured portraits of art students from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie, turning the runway into a moving gallery that celebrated the courage of the next generation of creatives.

Auditory and Visual Restraint

The emotional weight of the evening was carried by the haunting melodies of Portishead. Eschewing the high-energy collaborations of previous seasons, Johansson chose tracks like "Roads" and "The Rip" to mirror the brand’s own aesthetic arc: a blend of cinematic beauty and industrial unease. This sense of "polished restraint" extended to the beauty direction, where clean, simple hair and natural skin allowed the intellectual silhouettes to take center stage.

A Legacy in Motion

The front row—featuring a mix of global icons like Chappell Roan and Win Metawin—underscored Acne Studios' unique position as a bridge between tradition and the global avant-garde. As the house enters its fourth decade, the FW26 collection proves that true heritage isn't a fixed point in the past, but an ever-evolving perspective on time.
