For its sixth episode, Saint Laurent Rive Droite Talks presents Claire Denis, the renowned French filmmaker celebrated for her 1997 landmark film Beau Travail.
In this episode, she discusses her new film co-produced by Saint Laurent Productions and Anthony Vaccarello, The Fence. Reflecting on themes of memory, power, domination, and the many ways in which her work may resonate with contemporary tensions, Denis also sheds light on her relationship with Africa. After many years, she returned to Senegal, where her relationship with the people, more than the majestic landscapes, continues to shape her connection to the vast continent. Drawing from her work in cinema, she speaks in depth about the centrality of bodies, desire, and trust, as well as the constraints, fears, and collective commitment that shape her filmmaking sensibility. The Fence, released in theaters on April 8th, is based on Bernard‑Marie Koltès’s play Black Battles with Dogs and stars Isaach De Bankolé, Matt Dillon, Mia McKenna‑Bruce, and Tom Blyth.
