How to embrace the trend for sheer clothing

31 August 2023

2022 saw the return of sheer clothing as a major new trend: Naked Dressing. Carefully-orchestrated cut-outs were replaced with sleek swathes of see-through fabric offering ‘just enough’ coverage. Given that 90s fashion is seeing a sudden revival, this was perhaps to be expected – but three decades on, the sheer clothing style is no less impactful than when it debuted.

Last season it was very much a ‘dare to bare’ situation with modesty shunted aside in favour of a creating a ‘moment’. Those who are less comfortable showing skin will be happy to know that the future is more functional, with recent catwalks showcasing a practical approach to wearing sheer. Whether you want to make a lasting impression or just give a nod to the season’s hottest style, here’s how to embrace the trend for sheer clothing.

Choose strategic fabric

Looking to keep key areas covered in your sheer looks? Choose strategic fabric. Sheer materials with denser patches, such as lace, are a great way to embrace the trend while maintaining your modesty. You can also choose heavily layered pieces such as tulle skirts that give the impression of sheer while providing full coverage.

For professional events or family functions where you have to keep things more conservative, try an item that is on the edge of the sheer spectrum like a thin and lightweight linen dress.

Create a juxtaposition

To prevent sheer dressing from becoming too seductive, create a juxtaposition by pairing with utilitarian fabrics and designs.

For inspiration, look to the recent celebrity fashion show looks. Florence Pugh perfected this approach when she matched a cropped grey cotton jumper with a see-through embellished Valentino maxi-skirt. For a night-out on the town, you could imitate Kendall Jenner’s sheer black blouse and long leather skirt combo, offset further by heavy biker boots.

Use layering to balance

Another way to keep sheer clothing in control is to use layering. This is a great way to experiment with the trend without committing all the way and keep your overall image more balanced.

Again, you can look to the Autumn/Winter 2023 fashion shows for a masterclass on how to do this. See-through maxi-skirts are paired with oversized shirts and sheer tops are worn underneath loose-fitting suits, either of which would work perfectly for a confident office outfit. Alternatively you can look at dresses and jumpers that feature sheer panels to show off the waist, midriff, and neckline.

Brave and bold

The last way to embrace sheer clothing this season? Just go for it – be brave and bold.

Heading out to dance the night away, or honouring a special anniversary with an intimate romantic dinner? Pair full-fitting silk undergarments with a sheer cover-up, either a full dress or a two-piece to flash even more flesh. If that is a bit too daring, try a mesh bandage dress that is artfully wrapped to keep you feeling fully clothed.
