In the latest chapter of the House of McQueen's storied narrative, creative director Seán McGirr has conjured an Autumn/Winter collection that defies convention and embodies the unapologetic spirit that defined 19th century Victorian Gothic.
Photographed and directed by visionary artist Glen Luchford, the campaign is a visceral evocation of liberation and expression, one that taps into the raw emotions and countercultural ethos of Oscar Wilde, Vesta Tilley, and Romaine Brooks. "The collection was rooted in the uncompromising self-expression of independent thinkers," McGirr explains. "Exploring the tension between tradition and transgression... Their spirit of progressivism feels pertinent now, inherent in modern questions of character, identity, idealism, and gender."
Delving into the new McQueen Autumn/Winter 2025 campaign, it becomes clear that this collection is no mere exercise in historical homage, rather, it's an immersive experience that conjures a sense of ecstatic abandon. Bodies arch, twist, writhe across silken georgette ripples, bound by a wordless force that drives them to express themselves with reckless abandon.
Silk georgette ripples through shadow, brought into light, with intricate raw-edged lace, sharpened tailoring and black lacquered leather. Models Alex Consani, Athiec Geng, Chu Wong, Libby Taverner, appear in defiant poses, and adding a new dimension to the collection. Bound by a wordless force and compelled by instinct and feeling, the movement is brought full circle as set to the soundtrack, ‘Overcome,’ performed by Tricky, Martina Topley-Bird. The new campaign reminds us that freedom lies not in conformity but in embracing our deepest selves – no matter how unconventional or counterculture they may be. Watch the full campaign film here.
